Wits & Weights | Fat Loss, Nutrition, & Strength Training for Lifters
For skeptics of the fitness industry who want to work smarter and more efficiently to build muscle and lose fat. Wits & Weights cuts through the noise and deconstructs health and fitness with an engineering mindset to help you develop a strong, lean physique without wasting time.
Nutrition coach Philip Pape explores EFFICIENT strength training, nutrition, and lifestyle strategies to optimize your body composition. Simple, science-based, and sustainable info from an engineer turned lifter (that's why they call him the Physique Engineer).
From restrictive fad diets to ineffective workouts and hyped-up supplements, there's no shortage of confusing information out there.
Getting in the best shape of your life doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. By using your WITS (mindset and systems!) and lifting WEIGHTS (efficiently!), you can build muscle, lose stubborn fat, and achieve and maintain your dream physique.
We bring you smart and efficient strategies for movement, metabolism, muscle, and mindset. You'll learn:
- Why fat loss is more important than weight loss for health and physique
- Why all the macros (protein, fats, and yes even carbs) are critical to body composition
- Why you don't need to spend more than 3 hours in the gym each week to get incredible results
- Why muscle (not weight loss) is the key to medicine, obesity, and longevity
- Why age and hormones (even in menopause) don't matter with the right lifestyle
- How the "hidden" psychology of your mind can unlock more personal (and physical) growth than you ever thought possible, and how to tap into that mindset
If you're ready to separate fact from fiction, learn what actually works, and put in the intelligent work, hit that "follow" button and let's engineer your best physique ever!

Hey, what's up guys? Quick bonus episode today. And I need to give you a warning before you even think about hiring a coach or joining a nutrition program, it's something I've been thinking about a lot, as I have had folks come into my program, either one-on-one or our group program, whitson Weights Physique University, and their initial thought is wow, there's a lot of content here, there are a lot of steps. I'm feeling a little bit overwhelmed. I'm not sure if this is right for me Now. Granted, that could be a fault of mine in the marketing of this and setting expectations, so I'm working on that. But this is a mistake that I see all the time, where people tell themselves I need to get more consistent before I start, or I need to lose a little weight before I sign up, or I should probably figure out my macros first, because what I'll get from individuals who say like I feel like this isn't right for me, I'll say, well, what is it? Does it feel overwhelming? Because usually that's the case, and sometimes I'll say, yeah, there's, there's a lot of stuff, there's a lot of content, there's a lot of things. I don't think, I think this is too stressful and I'll say, well, you know, I've had clients in this program and I can connect you with them who felt the same way and then, when they started tracking and getting awareness of what's going on with their body, it actually reduced stress significantly and helped them be consistent. In addition, having that support, having people, having a coach who can look at what you're doing and give you a fresh perspective, without any skin in the game you know they don't have an emotional attachment to you Could be exactly what you need. So it's kind of like saying, hey, I need to get in shape before I hire a personal trainer, or I should probably, you know, fix my engine before I take my car to the mechanic, right? I mean, do you see the problem there? So if you could do it on your own, you wouldn't be looking for help in the first place. If what worked in the past worked for you, you you wouldn't be looking for help in the first place. If what worked in the past worked for you, you wouldn't be looking for something that's going to work right.
Philip Pape:It's kind of a little chicken and egg thing, and the reason I thought of this is not only individuals who I see come into my program, but also talking to other coaches, like, for example, I just recorded with Nikki Sims Barbell Logic and her episode is coming out soon, um, and she was talking about how, even for herself, she's got coaches who have helped her fix her form or help her learn how to train. That would have taken months and months and months. I felt the same thing. I hired a coach here in Connecticut for one hour when I was learning to lift and it fixed like six months of my uh issues.
Philip Pape:I have people who join our coaching program and they've struggled for years with. They've tried intermittent fasting. They've tried, you know, lots of cardio. Maybe they have been lifting weights and something's not quite working. Um, you, if you haven't already, you'll hear a case study with uh Cassandra, who is in that same situation. She was like trying to lose that last 10 pounds. She knew all of what to do and yet somehow it wasn't working.
Philip Pape:So you know, a good coach isn't here to take an already perfect plan and just make it better, right? A coach is here to take the messy, inconsistent, overwhelming, frustrating experience of trying to do it on your own and then turn it into something simple and structured and sustainable. Now, if you feel like, after you talk to a coach or join a program. It's still not simple or sustainable, but sure there could be a problem with how that program set up or it could be that they are not delivering what you need for you. So it's always.
Philip Pape:You always want to raise your hand and say, hey, this isn't working for me. Can you help me out? And if it's, if it's me, if you're in my program, you, you can ask anybody. I will personally reach out and have like a back and forth conversation and really get into the weeds of how do we make this work for you, because the last thing I want to do is, um, see you fail. Like I take it personally when people don't succeed with me, and that almost never happens. The only reason it ever happens is when someone is just not committed. Right, if you're committed and and I'm not even saying you're doing all the work right away, because I get that it takes time to build the momentum just being committed, just having the will to say yes, that I need help and leaning on the help system to do that, and not saying, hey, I need to be more consistent before I work with a coach, no, it's the opposite.
Philip Pape:If consistency is the problem, then guess what Having a coach makes it easier, not harder, like having a good coach, of course. So if you're telling yourself like I will join when I'm ready, ask yourself this what is going to change between now and then? If the true answer if you're honest with yourself is, well, nothing, because this is what I've been doing then what you really need is a system that works for you, not a new burst of motivation that fades the moment that life gets busy. Not, hey, I'm gonna go listen to Wits and Weights. Philip has all this great information, I'm just gonna take action from that.
Philip Pape:Sometimes that is not enough, and that is why hiring a coach isn't about being ready. It's about getting out of your own way and then making real progress now, not six months from now, when you're still spinning your wheels. And, by the way, here's, here's the irony when you join my coaching program, I will tell you I want you to take it slow. I don't want you to binge all the content. I don't want you to like try to do all the steps in one day, and we're not even going to start fat loss for probably four to four to eight weeks.
Philip Pape:And if you're hearing this right now, you're like oh, that sounds awful. I want I got to lose the weight now. That's the problem when you take this methodical approach. What then happens? When you do it the right way tracking, measuring, the right things you start to make progress and it becomes extremely invigorating. You get the confidence and after about two months now you're dialed in across the board with consistency. Now you're ready to hit the fat loss, if you even want to buy that Cause.
Philip Pape:By then you might've made some gains and improvements in your body composition. And you might say you know what? I actually don't want to be in a deficit right now, because my body is improving already. And then, of course, and then you make lots of progress and then, four or six months from when you start, you've now achieved the thing you wanted to achieve that took you years and years of struggling not to achieve and that you still won't achieve if you don't start now.
Philip Pape:So, before you put this off again, ask yourself would future you be grateful that you started now or that you waited another six months, another year, another two years, another five years? I think you know the answer. All right, that's it for today. If this hits home, let me know, shoot me a DM on Instagram at witsandweights that's one way to reach out to me or you could always drop a review in Apple or Spotify.
